Why Replace Rather Than Rebuild From Scratch?

When building a new structure from scratch, most of the costs contribute to the groundworks and building works. When you already have an existing conservatory, those works are already complete. If they are still structurally sound and appropriate for a Westbury product, you can keep the original base and work from there with a new orangery or garden room.

During the conservatory replacement process, our focus goes into improving and modernising this area of the home. Normally, this is with temperature regulation, where the room is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. What Can Be Replaced?

When we replace your conservatory, we design the space to house either a garden room or an orangery. These structures have different characteristics in terms of design, but require some core components.

If an organgery is selected, the doors and windows of the unit will be timber framed. These are made of an Accoya modified timber exterior with a European redwood interior, and a sapele or similar hardwood threshold. These frames are then finished with a microporous paint that only requires repainting every 12 years due to Accoya’s stable composition.

We use aluminium roof systems, which includes an automatic electric vent to let in cool air. With an orangery, a flat roof section is introduced to accommodate the roof lantern. 

The structure will feature modern double glazing to suit new building standards. We also offer solar-reflective glass and insulated glass options as available upgrades. These will directly address the temperature regulation issues, ensuring your new extension can be used year-round.

Materials and Glazing: What to Expect

As previously mentioned, we use timber in all our structures for longevity and low maintenance. The reason we source this sustainable timber for our windows and doors is that it provides a better result compared to standard solid wood. 

For the exterior, Accoya is best-suited due to its durability and natural water-resistant properties that prevent rot. European redwood’s tight grain takes paint well, resulting in a clean, consistent finish, enhancing the aesthetic of the surrounding area. The hardwood we use on our thresholds is to withstand human impact, like foot traffic, and we dedicate less than 4% to any product.

Our glazing options include standard double glazing, solar-reflective glass, and insulated glass. We offer independently tested and authorised products that save on energy. You can choose specific glazing options to target sound reduction, UV protection, and temperature regulation, which will be discussed during the design phase.

If you’re choosing to have an orangery installed, a timber roof lantern is a defining feature. This includes aluminium cladding on the outside to protect the laminated European redwood timber, preventing water ingress and rot. Aluminium is used because it does not require painting, and it is low maintenance, only requiring occasional cleaning.
